Sepsis Awareness is topic of Mosaic event on Sept 20

September is Sepsis Awareness Month. Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that is caused by the body's improper response to an infection which kills over 270,000 people each year in the United States.

Community Help Liaison at Mosaic Medical Center in Maryville, Jackie Ross, says sepsis is a life threatening condition.

"This has been recognized as such a problem that the medical community has made it what we call a time-sensitive diagnosis.  It's like a stroke or a heart attack - you have a certain amount of time to get some things done in order to help the patient survive and have a good outcome.  So Sepsis now is a time-sensitive diagnosis."

Sepsis affects more than 1.7 million people each year in the U.S. annually. It is the number one cause of hospital re-admissions, which can cost up to $2 billion each year. More people have died from Sepsis than of copied overdoses, breast cancer, and prostate cancer combined.

"Anybody can be a victim of this.  It is very insidious.  People need to be aware of it, so they can just keep an eye out."

This month, Mosaic Medical Center in Maryville will be partnering up with other health-care providers to raise awareness of Sepsis.

More information about Sepsis will be presented at a 'Lunch and Learn' event to provide more insight on the condition and what steps you can take to protect yourself and others. The event will be on September 20th at the Mosaic Medical Center in Maryville from 12-1 p.m.
