9-11 commemorated at Franklin Park

A special observance commemorating the 18th anniversary of the 9-11 terrorist attacks was held this morning in Maryville.

The event was organized by the Maryville Department of Public Safety-Fire Division. Fire Captain Phil Rickabaugh says it's important to remember those who lost their lives on 9-11 and those who have since died from health complications resulting from responding to the scene of the attacks to help those in need.

"There was a great sacrifice made by a lot of lives, just innocent people that had no idea how their day was going to end.  Obviously it ended tragically.  It kind of put a light on first responders - what they do on a daily basis.  We like to always bring that to the forefront.  Back when 9-11 happened, we were Americans again.  We were united.  It was a tragic event that brought the country together.  And we just want to keep that spirit alive."

World War II veteran and retired Northwest Missouri State University professor, Dr. Robert Bohlken, delivered the keynote speech at the event held for the second straight year at the Freedom Rock Memorial at Franklin Park in Maryville.
