Excessive heat watch issued Wednesday through Saturday

With heat index values rising over 100 degrees this week, National Weather Service Meteorologist Spencer Mell says area residents need to take proper precautions if they have to be outside this week.

"Basically, we've issued an excessive heat watch for Wednesday afternoon to Saturday evening.  What that means is that we could see a period of four days or longer where we have heat index values from above 100 degrees.  And during the nighttime, heat index values will not drop below 75 degrees.  And this will bring some dangerous heat to the area for the first time this season."

According to Mell, the aftermath of tropical storm Barry could provide some clouds and rain for the midwest.

"Currently, the remnants of Barry are roaming through southern Missouri right now.  We are seeing a few showers associated with that, but actually it's helping to bring clouds to the area which is keeping temperatures lower as we go through today and into tomorrow."
