Weather calls for more rain and flooding

Northwest Missouri gets a bit of a break from the rain today which is good news after heavy rains and some severe storms yesterday. Some areas of Northwest Missouri including St. Joseph saw nearly an inch of rain yesterday. Meteorologist with the National Weather Service Andy Bailey says projected totals for the week are even higher.

"We are in a really wet pattern at least through the next week or so.  We've pretty much got daily chances of precipitation until next Tuesday or Wednesday.  Up in northwest Missouri we could see rainfall amounts anywhere from five to seven inches with a few locations receiving even higher than that.  Anytime you're talking five, six, seven inches of rain in a week, it's obviously extremely wet."

Bailey adds because of the amount of rain in the extended forecast, areas affected by high waters earlier this spring will most likely again be faced with flooding issues.

"All the additional rainfall that's forecast over the Dakotas, Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas is going to do nothing but make the Missouri River rise again. We should see an increase in river levels over the next week to ten days.  It's really dependent on what rain falls in the next seven days as well as the rain that falls after that as well."

MODOT has closed several Northwest Missouri roads due to flooding including U.S. Route 159, U.S. Route 136 and Missouri Highway 118 west of Interstate 29.
