The 2018 school year saw 112 suicide screenings in the Maryville R-2 school district

During the 2018 school year, Maryville R-2 school district conducted 112 suicide screenings as part of its suicide prevention plan. Director of Student Services, Katie Neubauer, says depending on who reports the information, the process differs from each report.

"The student self-reported.  Then we have our form that we walk through and get information directly from the student.  But if it's a parent, or a peer, or a teacher who give us the information, a lot of times counselors will call in the student, interview them a little bit, see if they will self-report the same information that concerned the person who had reported to the counselor."

Neubauer says school officials ask a series of questions to determine a student's state of mind during the screening.

"Things like whether they have a plan, how long they felt this way.  And then work to make a determination on the level of risk we feel they are to themselves."

Neubauer adds their goal is to address student's issues before they consider suicide.
