Special Olympics athletes and coaches donated 500 pounds to Second Harvest

March 29th and 30th, Special Olympics Missouri held its largest state competition, the indoor games, in St. Joseph. In the wake of early March's flooding, participants and attendees were encouraged to bring one non-perishable food item to donate to Second Harvest Community Food bank. Multimedia and Manager for Special Olympics Missouri, Brandon Schatsiek, says the idea came from one of the teams' coaches.

"One of our coaches, Kathy Butler from Hannibal, approached us about doing a food drive so we sent it out to all of our athletes and coaches.  We were able to bring in more than 500 pounds of food that Second Harvest Food Bank was able to take in on our account."

Schatsiek says that this trend of community service may continue in the future.

"I wouldn't be surprised if we have other people who kind of take this on and make it a yearly thing, not just for St. Joe area but for other areas around the state as well.  It's a great way to thank the community but also teach our athletes how to be appreciative and how to give back."

Special Olympics Missouri provides the opportunity for over 16,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities to participate in 16 Olympic-type sports throughout the state.
