May is Stroke Awareness Month

May is Stroke Awareness Month and the American Heart Association is encouraging people to take control of their health and lower their risk for strokes. Communications Director for the American Heart Association, Julie Lay, says most stokes can be prevented through lifestyle habits.

"If you smoke, quit or don't start if you don't smoke currently.  Make sure you manage your blood pressure.  Be physically active, eat a healthy diet.  Make sure you maintain a healthy weight through the active diet and exercise.  And also control your cholesterol and your blood sugar.  Those things can really help reduce your risk of stroke."

Lay encourages people to remember the acronym FAST for people they feel are having a stroke.

"F is for face-drooping.  Then Arm weakness or if one of their arms is numb.  Then S is for speech difficulty and if they are having problems with that, immediately call 911.  Which is what the T is for - time to call 911.  If anyone is having any of the issues, the face-drooping or the arm weakness or the speech difficulty, make sure you immediately call 911."
