I-29 continues to be closed

I-29 continues to be closed at the Highway 71 exit in Andrew County. Northwest Area Engineer with the Missouri Department of Transportation, Adam Watson says the reason for the closure is work still being done on the interstate in Iowa due to this spring's flooding.

"We don't want interstate traffic that wants to go to the northern Midwest traveling up 29 and not having anywhere to go in Iowa.  We would be poor neighbors if we just dumped traffic on Iowa where there's just no place to go.  In fact, I don't think there's an exit open on I-29 in Iowa north of the border.  I think it's closed right there.  The damage is pretty extensive."

Watson adds there are still roads in northwest Missouri closed due to the floods.

"...potential damage on the Missouri side. 159, 136 both have substantial damage.  159 had a bridge that was damaged beyond repair and it's going to have to be replaced.  136 has substantial scour holes eaten through the highway that have to be filled before it can be opened, reopened, and made passable.  So we have contracts out now for 159 and 136.  Another contract out for 118 should be let (I think it was let today) to get that into passable shape.  These are emergency contracts intended just to get the highway reopened."

Watson says long-term repairs to those roads will take place later this year.
