Higher Education funding approved by MO lawmakers

The state budget approved by Missouri lawmakers calls for improved funding for higher education. That's according to Missouri State Senator Dan Hegeman, a Republican from Cosby.

"This year we were able to add money to the core budget of our higher education institutions.  It's the first time we've done that in a number of years.  I think we've done it twice in the last ten years.  So this would be adding a million dollars to the core budget and leaves the university how they want to spend that money whether they want to use it for programming, for infrastructure, repair, maintance.  It really leaves the institution to decide how they want to do that."

Hegeman says the budget also includes two point five million dollars for Northwest Missouri State University's proposed Agriculture Learning Center.

"Hopefully, we'll get a match from donors out there to get to the level of about five million dollars to be able to move that project forward and move our Agriculture Department at Northwest Missouri State University forward and make some really great improvements out there."

Hegeman made his comments following yesterday's Legislative Breakfast organized by the Maryville Chamber of Commerce.
