Hazardous Waste Collection Site opens tomorrow

Area residents needing to get rid of household hazard waste can do so tomorrow. The Nodaway County Household Hazardous Waste collection site will be open from 8 a.m. to noon. The collection site serves residents from Atchison, Gentry, Holt, Nodaway, and Worth. Identification will be required and there is no fee to drop off items. Households hazardous waste includes household chemicals (bleach, ammonia, and cleaners), fertilizers, pesticides, brake fluid, Ni-cad, lithium/lead acid batteries, compact fluorescent light bulbs, antifreeze, oil based paint, and varnish. Community & Environmental Planner for the Northwest Missouri Regional Council of Government, Cassie Hasekamp, says there are certain items that the collection site will not accept.

"We do not accept latex paint.  Latex paint can actually be dried out and put into the trash.  We do not collect alkaline batteries or tires or motor oil, gasoline, and obviously anything that's explosive.  We cannot collect those either."

The collection site will be open tomorrow from 8 a.m. to noon as well as on July 6th, Sept. 7th, Oct. 5th, and Nov. 2nd.   The collection site is located at the Nodaway County Maintenance Barn at 1516 Halsey Street in Maryville.
