Cool season grass growth affected by cool weather

The cool weather has had an affect on cool season grass growth. Since cold season grasses are short in height and production, pastures which were grazed heavily in early spring have seen limited regrowth. Agronomy Specialist at the University of Missouri Extension Wayne Flanary says now is the time for farmers to make up production by using different forages to satisfy their herd numbers.

"Summer annuals fit into that. One of the things I run into quite often, whenever somebody is preparing and thinking about, think about the usage for this particular species.  Are you going to graze it?  Then there are certain species that fit better.  If you are going to ensile it and make silage, there's other species.  So think about your harvest methods before you make that selection.  A lot of times, I find that's an issue with some of the producers."

Flanary says if anyone has any further questions or concerns regarding the cool season grass production, they should contact  their local Extenstion office.
