Annual Shenandoah Disability Awareness Walk will be May 18th

The annual Shenandoah Disability Awareness Walk “A Bridge to Understanding" is coming up Saturday, May 18th. The event starts at noon at Sportsman park located along Ferguson Road in the north part of the city with lunch and live entertainment provided. The 2 mile walk to the Nishnabotna Bridge begins at 1:15p.m.
Marketing Director for the Shenandoah Chamber and Industry Association, Shelly Warner, says the event's purpose is to bring better understanding between people with and without disabilities.

"And we walk to the bridge - the big bridge over the Nishnabotna River- and then we serve rootbeer floats.  So they wheel in wheelchairs or walkers.  We also have golfcarts available.  A lot of them just walk it and a few run it."

Warner says that this year Kip Attaway will be preforming comedy, music, and inspiration for the event.

"He actually has a daughter who's disabled that travels the country with him as he plays music all around.  So he totally understands them.  So he's a great person to entertain at our event."

The event is free and open to the public. Participants are asked to sign a release before the event. In the case of rain, the event will move to the Depot Deli at 101 Rainroad Avenue. For information, questions, or to volunteer, contact the Shenandoah Chamber and Industry Association.
