St. Joseph is recognizing National Public Health Week

The City of St Joseph is recognizing National Public Health Week this week. This year's theme is "Missouri's Call to Action: Public Health Matters." Public Information Officer for the St Joseph Health Department Stephanie Malita says there are many strides in public health to celebrate this year.

"We always want to celebrate the power that prevention has.  When you are able to educate somebody about an issue before they are affected by it so that they can make a better choice.  That's essentially how we look at prevention.  We love being able to celebrate the power of prevention.  We advocate for healthy and fair policies that protect people's health.  By doing that, that just helps create stronger public health and a stronger community."

National Public Health Week is also about educating people on healthy lifestyle choices. Malita says the St. Joseph Health Department is offering information for living a healthy lifestyle to the public this week.

" What we're doing at the Health Department is stepping up our outreach within our building.  Typically we have brochures and handouts and things like that. In our waiting room, there are TVs and while we play entertainment videos, we also play educational videos.  In addition to those things, in the lobby we are setting up a table featuring different divisions of our public health department every day."

For more information on National Public Health Week, you can visit the City of St Joseph Health Department at 904 South 10th Street in St. Joe, or visit the St Joseph Health Department's Facebook page.
