St. Joseph health care assistant sentenced to prison

A 34-year-old in-home health care nursing assistant was
sentenced to five years in federal prison without parole for stealing from a
client.

Ashley Garr of St. Joseph was sentenced Thursday and ordered to pay nearly
$250,000 in restitution to her victim.

Garr pleaded guilty in August to filing a false tax return and aggravated identity theft.

Prosecutors say Garr used information stolen from the victim's checkbook and
identification to withdraw about $224,000 from the victim's bank account. She
used the money to pay her student loans, credit card bills and other personal
and household expenses. The crime was uncovered when the victim's bookkeeper
noticed charges the victim didn't make on her account.

Garr also admitted she filed fraudulent tax returns for 2014 and 2015.
