Northwest students take Spring Break to help others in need

Several Northwest Missouri State University used their spring break this year learning ways to help others in need.
Fourteen Northwest students traveled to River State College in Fort Pierce, Florida last month to participate in the domestic disaster and response training program, Florida Hope. The program focused on challenging its participants to overcome their fears and heighten their emergency response skills. The four day disaster response training focused on psychological first aid, a mass casualty incident, evidence collection investigation, victim information and assistance centers and more. Twenty more Northwest students traveled to Wilmington, North Carolina over spring break to help assist with relief efforts and home restorations after Hurricane Florence, as a part of the program Alternative Spring Break. The group explores issues of social justice, economic disparity and community outreach while helping to develop critical thinking and leadership skills. This year's group spent time at project site homes, ripping up damaged floors, prepping walls for resurfacing and putting up drywall for walls and ceilings.
