CWD in deer on a slow rise in Missouri

The Missouri Department of Conservation recently concluded their 2018-19 disease surveillance efforts for Chronic Wasting Disease. After testing more than 32,000 Missouri deer, the MDC reports that 41 samples have tested positive, bringing the state total to 116 since the first reported case of CWD in 2012. Statewide News Services Coordinator for MDC, Joe Jerek, says CWD is still low in Missouri.

"A couple takeaways with this information is the disease is a serious disease that kills all deer it infects and it can't it can spread and is spreading.  But the good news is that it's still pretty rare in Missouri."

The latest survey found eight deer in Macon County, three in Linn County, and one in Mercer County testing positive for CWD.  It is recommended to hunters in areas known to have CWD to have their deer tested for the disease before consuming the meat.
