Areas near MO River to remain closed due to flooding

Several Missouri Department of Conservation areas north of St. Joseph are to remain closed because of flooding near the Missouri River. The Conservation's sites were first closed during the river bottom flooding in March. Since then, many of the low-lying affected areas are still in standing water or inaccessible. Media Specialist for the Missouri Department of Conservation Bill Graham says water levels are predicted to rise.

"We have some high water levels predicted from snowmelt in the Great Plains that's expected to get high enough to go through levee breaches at a few places, places where the levees would have kept the water out in the past.  Relatively high water for now going to let water come in from the Missouri."

Graham adds the Department of Conservation is working to reopen these access points, but does not have a time frame of when they will be safe to use again.

"We appreciate that with all of the flood issues that have gone on those bottoms, we appreciate the public's patience.  We're sure working as hard as we can to get everything back to normal.  There is no set time frame.  We're really at the mercy of mother nature in terms of what happens with the river going up and down the area this spring."

Three Missouri Department of Conservation river accesses have been reopened, they include Payne Landing, Nodaway Landing, and French Bottom. However, other river access points in Atchison, Andrew, Buchanan, and Holt County will remain closed.
