Advocacy Center encourages awareness of child abuse

April is Child Abuse Prevention month and the Chillicothe Police Department and North Central Missouri Children's Advocacy Center is encouraging people to wear blue to bring awareness to the issue. Chillicothe Police Chief, Jon Maples, is encouraging parents to talk to their children about what is and isn't appropriate boundaries.

"Just talking to the kiddos and listening to your kiddos, knowing your children, talking with your children, listening to your children, and just help minimize the opportunity for them to be in negative environments or negative situations where they can be taken advantage of is huge."

Maples says they will be partnering with the Children's Advocacy Center in May to host Stewards of Children. The program tells the stories of survivors and provides a five step foundation to educate people on how they can protect children in their community.

"It's built off of the five step foundation.  To learn the facts, minimize the opportunity, talk about it, recognize the signs, and react with responsibility.  So that's the main thing.  As long as we can get a process in place to help the kiddos if there's a possibility of them being victimized.  That North Central Missouri Advocacy Center is huge."
