MoDOT urges drivers not to drive over flooded roadways

Freezing and thawing during the winter has caused issues on roads in Northwest Missouri. Potholes have been an issue for Missouri drivers all winter and Communication Specialist with the Missouri Department of Transportation Marcia Johnson says that is something that, at the moment, MoDOT only has temporary repairs for.

"Most of the repairs we've been able to do have been temporary fixes because there isn't the type of mix that we use that's a more permanent fix.  It's just not available to us right now.  So what you see patched up one day could pop out the next day.  Please have patience with us.  We do have forms on our website - modot.org - where folks could report those potholes.  So please go there, report it.  We may know about it, we may not.  And that's going to be the easiest way to get notification out there and send out crews to check that."

Flood waters have also made the repair process difficult for MoDOT.  Johnson says it is best to take care when driving because potholes can hide under standing water.

"The freeze-thaw cycle that we've had, that is what creates a pothole in and of itself.  We've had a pretty rough winter.  We've had a pretty rough road to spring with some potholes.  Our crews are tyring to fight them, but now we're fighting flood waters as well.  So those damaged roads could get further damaged if there are rushing waters that overtake the roadway.  So again, don't drive through that waters.  You don't know what the road service looks like underneath it.  The potholes could have become gaping. We could have hole lapses in roadway underneath there.  We don't know until the waters recede."
