Use tax discussed at Maryville City Council meeting

The Maryville City Council voted last night to place a 2.375% use tax on the April 2nd ballot. Maryville residents voted down a similar proposal in November. City Manager Greg McDanel says city officials feel the potential from the use tax is too important to not address again.

"City Council staff believe there's a lot of education to be done in the community on how use tax essentially applies existing sales tax rates to the purchase of online, out-of-state vendors. The impact on that locally is tremendous and, therefore, warranted putting it back on the April ballot."

New City Council member Tye Parsons took the oath of office during last night's meeting.  Parsons fills the seat previously held by Renee Riedel, who recently resigned to take a job opportunity in Clarinda, Iowa.
