Extortion reports made over sexual selfies

Northwest Missouri State University Police officers are investigating reports of students being extorted after sharing photo's of themselves sexual in nature. That's according to University Police Chief Clarence Green.

"We received 6-8 reports over the course of the academic year concerning individuals who voluntarily sent out selfies of themselves in some form of a chat room or through social media to a group of persons or a single person to whom they thought they had a relationship with. In the process after sending out those selfies, whether after a day or a period of time, they were contacted and being extorted for money."

Green says the extortion attempts are a crime and says anyone who may be in this situation should contact University Police.

"What we're trying is to get more information out about folks who have possibly been extorted so we can get those reports.  These reports are difficult to follow up on.  Being that when we try to trace them down, the origin tends to be outside our country."

Green adds individuals should refrain from sending images that they don't want shared with the general public.
