Former Northwest Missouri State Bearcat head men's basketball coach Steve Tappmeyer was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame during ceremonies held Sunday night in Springfield.

Tappmeyer is the all-time leader in wins in the Bearcat program with 408 in his 21 seasons at Northwest. His team also won seven MIAA tournament titles and three regular seasons titles, and appeared twice in the NCAA Division II Elite 8. His teams also won 19 or more games in 11 consecutive seasons, and 22 or more wins in nine of his final 12 seasons at Northwest. Tappmeyer says the honor made for a special evening.

"For a guy that grew up and coached and played in Missouri and everything you did was in this state, to be in the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame is pretty special," Tappmeyer said after the induction. "Like we always say, it takes so many people to be able to get an award like this, and I've been really blessed with players and fans and friends and staff and the whole works. It's a fun night, though, to have so many friends come up and support you."

Current Bearcat head coach Ben McCollum was also honored for being named last season's NABC National Division II Coach of the Year and the 2016-17 national championship Northwest men's basketball team was also recognized for their title.

Other inductees included former St. Louis Cardinals reliever Lee Smith and Kansas City Chiefs running back Mike Garrett, who played in Super Bowl I and IV for the Chiefs.
