Oliva rolls into ITA Finals

The Northwest Missouri State Bearcat men's and women's tennis teams competed in the ITA Regional tournament last weekend in Oklahoma City. Northwest's Franco Oliva captured the flight A singles crown at the event. Northwest head tennis coach Mark Rosewell says he was pleased with the way both teams performed last weekend.

"Both teams really played over our head I think," Rosewell said. "Outstanding performances by both the men's and women's teams. Julio, a first semester freshman, made it to the top eight in singles, which is outstanding for a freshman or anybody for that matter. We had three of the male players get to the top eight in the quarterfinals. That's pretty good. We actually had to play ourselves in the quarterfinals and eliminate one of them. And then of course we had Franco winning the championship being unseeded."

And after the biggest performance of Oliva's young career, the sophomore now turns his focus to the ITA Finals in Rome, GA.

"The small college championships include Division 2, Division 3, NAIA, so it's a big deal."

Oliva's first match in the national tournament will be Thursday, October 11.
