Mayors Coalition to work towards protecting the environment

St. Joseph Mayor Bill McMurray has become a member of a national coalition to promote cleaning up the environment.
McMurray has joined more than 400 other U.S. cities in the U.S. Climate Mayors Coalition. The network of mayors was founded in 2014 and encourages efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions and help keep the environment clean. Public Information Officer with the City of St. Joseph Mary Robertson says the network will be a good opportunity for the city of St. Joseph

"If we look at the world around us, it's becoming just very clear that we need to all be doing what we can, everything possible, to cut greenhouse gas emissions and work toward protecting and preserving the environment that we live in.  So with that, there's an effort through the Mayors Coalition to get communities to join other communities together to work towards this effort."

Part of the plan that goes along with becoming a member of the coalition is to set up a non-partisan advisory committee of leaders in the community to work with the city and develop and implement a five year Climate Action Plan.  Robertson says the committee will also work outside of just St. Joseph.

"This committee, I'm sure, will work hand-in-hand with the region, with the state, and on a national level; combining efforts and utilizing resources available across the country - locally and on a national level."

The committee will be chaired by longtime St. Joseph resident and worker with Ecumenical Eco-Justice of St. Joseph Diane Waddell.
