Campaign brings awareness to child safety

The Missouri Coalition for roadway safety is putting on a child passenger safety campain beginning Sunday and running through next Saturday. MoDot Child Passenger Safety Program Coordinator Tara Van Loo says the campain focuses on child safety in vehicles.

"We are campaigning to let people know that it's very important to make sure that the child is in the proper either booster, car seat, rear-facing car seat depending on their height, age, and weight.  It's very important that they ae in a proper seat just in case they are in a car crash."

Van Loo adds that a child needs to be in a booster seat if they don't fit the state guildlines for height and weight, otherwise a child could end up with injuries from a crash.

"If they are not tall enough for a car seat, then they have to be in a booster seat which makes sure that the seat belt hits them in the strong bones of their body, which is the clavicle or the hip bones.  If they are not tall enough or heavy enough and if they are just in a seatbelt, they can be caught on their neck by the seatbelt if they are in a car crash.  Or the seatbelt will go over their soft belly which can cause internal injuries if they are in a crash and they are just in a seatbelt, and they are not tall enough or heavy enough."
