House, Senate look to complete Farm Bill

The U-S Senate approved their version of the 2018 Farm Bill by a vote of 86 to 11, now it's off to the conference committee to work out the differences between it and the House version.

President of Missouri Farm Bureau's Board of Directors, Blake Hurst, an Atchison County farmer, says the major discrepancy between the house and senate is the effect the Farm Bill will have on Supplemental Nutrition Assistant programs.

"I think the biggest differences would be the differences on how they approach the SNAP program. It will take some work in the conference committee for us to get a compromise that will pass both the house and the senate."

Hurst is hopeful that the finished bill will also provide relief for area farmers.

"I think the most important part of the Farm Bill for farmers in northwest Missouri is crop insurance. Particularly in a year like the one we're having, where rain has been very variable over Missouri. We've had areas that have actually had too much rain, and also areas that are suffering from rain and the heat we're receiving now. That crop insurance is a safety net for Missouri farms."

The current bill expires September 30th.
