Two Northwest Missouri State Bearcat football players were injured -- one seriously -- in a one-vehicle accident last night in Andrew County.
According to a report from the Missouri Highway Patrol, a pick-up driven by 22-year-old Cole M. Forney of Maryville was southbound on I-29, 5 miles north of St. Joseph around 7:50 last night when the pick-up hit a slick spot in the roadway. The vehicle traveled off the roadway and struck a concrete barrier, ejecting Forney onto northbound I-229. The pick-up overturned onto the guardrail and came to rest on its wheels on southbound I-29 fully engulfed in flames.
A passenger in the vehicle, 22-year-old Jacob D. Vollstedt of Iowa City, Iowa escaped with moderate injuries. Forney suffered serious injuries. Both were taken by Andrew County Ambulance to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. According to the report Forney was not wearing a safety device.
The accident was investigated by the Missouri Highway Patrol, Andrew County Sheriff's Department, Savannah Fire Department and Missouri Department of Transportation. Forney is listed as a senior linebacker on Northwest's 2017 roster. Vollstedt, a senior linebacker on the 2016 roster, played his last game for the Bearcats in the national championship last month.
