Farmers Market-Iowa

In 2008, only about 5,000 farmers nationally supplied goods to farmer's markets.

Now, that number has jumped to over 81-hundred farmers, many supplement their incomes by selling produce directly to consumers. The U-S Agriculture Department is promoting this week as "National Farmers Market Week". Logan, Iowa farmer Danielle Mayer says farmers markets are key to help beginning farmers get their operation off the ground.

She says, however, that in some communities in Iowa, there are more farmers markets than local farmers can supply.

Mayer is a participant in PFI's Savings Incentive Program- the program is designed to help beginning farmers build a profitable farm by assisting them with a business plan, and linking them with experienced farmers as mentors.
