Iowa Farm Bill Amendment

Usually groups like the National Farmers Union, American Farm Bureau Federation and conservation groups don't see eye-to-eye on conservation issues, but they do agree on the amendment being offered to the farm bill in the U S House this week.

The Crop Insurance Accountability amendment ties conservation of soil and wetlands to eligibility for crop insurance subsidies. National Wildlife Federation representative, Julie Sibbing, says there are benefits for farmland, wildlife habitat and waterways... especially the Mississippi River.

Sibbing says besides keeping topsoil in place, conservation programs keep farm chemicals from leaching into waterways.

If the amendment fails, sponsors say they will push for a separate bill. Farmers who don't comply would still be able to purchase crop coverage, but they would be responsible for the entire premium.
