Even with below average temperatures and unusual weather for this time of year, hunters shot over 21,000 turkeys during the first week of Missouri's three week spring hunting season.
In this years harvest for the first week, 328 fewer turkeys were shot than last year. Male turkeys made up 17 percent of the harvest compared to 26 percent. Resource Scientist Jason Isabelle says it is insignificant, considering weather conditions hunters had to deal with. Isabelle oversees the Missouri Conservation Department turkey management program and says with normal weather conditions returning...hunters could easily top last years end of season turkey kill. Missouri's top three turkey harvest counties in the first week of the season were Franklin with 560, Texas with 444, and St. Genevieve with 413.
