An investigation spanning two states and two months of time lands a murder suspect in custody in St. Joseph.
Police in Chanute, KS identified the driver involved in a high-speed chase from Leavenworth, KS to south of St. Joseph as 27 year-old Brian Shields. Leavenworth Police chased the suspect after they tried to stop his vehicle yesterday afternoon. It was then the 2001 Ford Explorer took off from police. Authorities from Leavenworth and Platte County pursued Shields up 59 Highway into Buchanan County, seeking help from the St. Joseph Police Department. Shields tried to avoid road spikes put down by St. Joseph Police but rolled his vehicle after losing control. Police then said he was ejected from the vehicle that reached speeds up to 80 mph. The pursuit stems from a murder investigation spanning back to February in southeast Kansas. Shields is one of two suspects charged in the murder of a Chanute, KS woman on February 6, 2013, later identified as Cristy Wiles. Wiles' body was found inside a home that burned to the ground in Neosho County, Kansas. St. Joseph Police said Shields has been taken into police custody. He and the female passenger who had to be extricated from the vehicle were taken to Heartland Regional Medical Center. No word yet on the extent of their injuries.
