Tjeerdsma named NW AD

Former Northwest Missouri State head football coach Mel Tjeerdsma is returning to Maryville to become the school's next Director of Athletics.

Tjeerdsma will replace Wren Baker who recently took the position of Deputy Athletics Director for External Relations at Memphis University. Northwest President Dr. John Jasinski says in talking with Tjeerdsma about possible candidates for the A-D position, Tjeerdsma showed an interest in the job.

As football coach at Northwest, Tjeerdsma led his teams to three national championships in 1998, 1999 and 2009. For the past two years, Tjeersdma served Austin College in Sherman, Texas leading fundraising efforts for athletics enhancement. Tjeerdsma's start date as Director of Athletics has not been determined at this time. Yesterday's news conference announcing the hiring of Mel Tjeerdsma as Northwest's new Director of Athletics was aired live on KXCV/KRNW.
