The future of St. Joseph Museums could be up in air if the organization is not able to offset a spending deficit.
An oversight committee announced Tuesday they will be meeting with city officials to discuss obtaining additional funds for operational costs. The committee, created in 2007 after a lawsuit saw the funding for museums reduced by a third, said they have been losing $75,000 a year since that time. In order to make up for the loss, the museums have been dipping into a reserve that could run dry in the next eight years. The committee is suggesting the city add an additional $100,000 to the museums' budget. Currently, more than $300,000 of their funding comes from tax revenues. Without more funds, the committee is worried the museums could be history. The museums are also looking to renew their accreditation with the American Alliance of Museums. The accreditation is important because it is required by the city in their contract to fund the museums. With the organization operating in a deficit, accreditation may be difficult to obtain. If they are able to get extra funding, it would go to maintaining the Wyeth-Tootle Mansion as well as other operational costs.
