The city of Saint Joseph is celebrating a population increase.

The city saw an increase of three point seven seven between 2000 and 2010 according to the census. Director of the Community Alliance in Saint Joseph Steve Johnston says the increase holds extra significance compared to other Missouri communities, which have seen declines. Johnston says this is because population effects federal funding for an area.

The city recently held a ceremony where Mayor Bill Faulkner and Buchanan County Presiding Commissioner R-T Turner updated a Missouri Department of Transportation population marker, the first of 15 leading into Saint Joseph.
