NW President Comments on Student Death

Northwest Missouri State University students, faculty and staff are mourning the loss of 21 year senior Tomarken Smith, who died following an alleged assault early this morning near the corner of Fourth and Market in Maryville.

Northwest President Dr. John Jasinski says Smith, a pre-professional studies major, was a student everyone looked up to.

Smith was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, a former resident assistant on the Northwest campus and a current student employee at the University fitness center. Members of Northwest's fraternities and sororities are organizing a candlelight vigil in Smith's memory tonight at 9 o'clock at the Memorial Bell Tower. The vigil is open to the public. A moment of silence in memory of Smith will be observed before tomorrow's Bearcat football game. 2 Bethany, Missouri residents have been charged with second degree murder in connection with this morning's incident. 31-year-old Kevin Dell Mooney and 23-year-old Tony M. Overlin.
