Missouri Republicans are facing a combative lieutenant governor primary, while eight Democrats are conducting a calm campaign.
The GOP race developed when Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder decided not to run for governor and seek a third term. By then, Sen. Brad Lager was already in the race. The primary contest has featured the candidates challenging the other's conservative credentials. On the Democratic side, the large field has struggled to raise money and attract attention. The best known candidate is Susan Montee, who two years ago lost re-election as state auditor. Also running are conservation commissioner Becky Plattner and current or former lawmakers Judy Baker, Fred Kratky, Sara Lampe and Jackie Townes McGhee. St. Louis school board member Bill Hass and Dennis Weisenburger complete the field.
