Old American Month

May is older American month across the United States.

Older American month was established in 1963 in conjunction with the older American Act during Kennedy Administration in 1963. In 1980 President Carter changed the name from 'Senior Citizen Month' to the Current 'Older American Month'. Every president since Kennedy has issued a formal proclamation during or prior to the month of May encouraging the entire nation to pay tribute in some way to older american. Executive Director of the Northwest Missouri Area Agency on Aging, Rebecca Flaherty says this theme is all about encouraging older adults to get out there and be active.
