The Missouri National Guard is planning to build a new maintenance facility for its armory site in Macon.

The building is currently being designed and construction of more than 30,000 square foot structure will take place sometime after October. Public affairs representative for the 70th troop command of the Missouri National Guard, Bill Phelan says the more than $8 million facility will provide field level maintenance for all Missouri National Guard vehicles in north-central Missouri and will bring other changes for the Macon area.

The new shop will replace a smaller facility in Mexico, Missouri, that was built in the 1950s. Phelan says the larger facilities will better support the more modern and larger equipment now used by the National Guard and will also provide a classroom and a fitness room to allow employees to maintain their fitness to meet military standards. The Macon armory is headquarters for th Guard's 1438th Engineer Company.
