April 16, 2012THURMAN, IA | By: Wayman
The storm damage cleanup continues across southwest Iowa today, after possible tornados decimate Thurman Iowa and causes extensive damage to the hospital in Creston.
Possible tornados blew glass into the hospital and damaged the roof, while several homes throughout Creston were either damaged or blown apart from the possible tornados Saturday night. The emergency manager in Thurman estimated about 75% of the small town was damaged by a possible tornado. Emergency shelters remain open in area schools in several communities. Yesterday Iowa governor Terry Branstad and state officials flew over the damaged communities, then the governor declared emergency proclamations for both Freemont and Union counties. Southwest community college reported damaged dorm roofs and overturned vehicles on campus. Some student were treated for flying glass but no serious injuries have been reported in any of the southwest Iowa towns damaged by the storms. The only major injury report came from a semi driver whose rig was blown over on the interstate west of Thurman. He was reportedly taken to council bluffs with a punctured lung. Anyone needing housing or other assistance is asked to call their local police, emergency management office, or the Red Cross.
