Savannah's water rates will increase 48% in May to ensure the city meets its financial obligations to bondholders.
The city council approved the rate increase on Monday. City Administrator Jill Cornett says the rate for the first 1,000 gallons will increase from $14.30 to $21.16. The vote came after a water rates committee recommended that the northwest Missouri town implement one big increase rather than a series of smaller increases. THe bill also includes an annual increase of 3% for 3 years, starting in may 2013. The council also agreed to look at long-term plans and projected costs for maintaining the water plant at a future date.
