Besides local officials, Red Cross assistance, and a state emergency declaration, southwest Iowa residents could soon see help from federal authorities.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency says it's monitoring the damage in Union and Freemont counties, and working with local emergency responders. FEMA offices in Kansas City, Illinois, and Texas are all coordinating the federal response, not just in Iowa but also areas impacted in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska. They say they are on standby to send assistance to those areas as needed.
