Even as the construction to build a new grain elevator in Atchison Kansas begins, the owner faces fines from the explosion that destroyed the old one.
Bartlett Grain Company has been cited by the US Department of Labor and find more than $400,000 for violations at their old elevator. "Osha" investigators say operators allowed explosive grain dust to accumulate, used compressed air to remove dust without first shutting down ignition sources, failed to require employees to use fall protection gear when working from heights, and site other issues. The report sites a lack of training on job hazards and an inadequate emergency action plan. Bartlett's grain elevator exploded on October 29th last year, killing 6 people and injuring others. Concrete for the larger replacement was poured a week ago today.
