A report state lawmakers are considering could have an impact on state prisons in St. Joseph, Maryville, and Cameron.

Missouri lawmakers heard from a national expert who says putting Missouri criminals in prison for longer sentences could actually increase the state's crime rate. State supreme court judge Ray Price says the problem is that many offenders return to prison after getting out.

Many other states have been able to cut jail expenses by decreasing the amount of time offenders spend in jail for non-violent crimes.
