Officer Medal of Valor

A St. Joseph Police officer will be receiving the Missouri Medal of Valor this week.

Officer Kenneth Smith Junior is 1 of 8 recipients the governor will be decorating in his office at the state capitol building. Smith is receiving the medal for his involvement last year when he responded to a domestic disturbance in St. Joseph with a man armed with a handgun. A fight ensued and the suspect fired off a shot at officer Smith's head just as he pushed the gun away. Smith used deadly force to end the threat. The State Medal of Valor will be given to him tomorrow morning.
