Guthrie Search Slows

The search for a missing Highway Patrol trooper in northwest Missouri is again expected to slow down.

For the past several weeks crews have been draining and excavating mud in a 4-acre pond Missouri River flooding left near Big Lake. Search dogs indicated the body of missing trooper Fred Guthrie Junior might have been there, but the search has only turned up an item of clothing which forensic specialists don't believe matches Guthrie's patrol uniform. Now, the backhoes and other heavy equipment are set to pull out of the operation today. But sergeant Sheldon Lyon with the Highway Patrol headquarters in St. Joseph says the patrol will not give up.

Investigators add they will also work with area farmers to be watching for any signs of Guthrie who disappeared and was presumed drowned on the first day of August.
