An historic mansion surrounded by debate in St. Joseph will be sold.
THe Geiger Mansion is the stone built castle looking structure east of downtown St. Joseph, built around 1911 and is listed on the national register of historic places. It was given to the city from its previous owner, UMB Bank. The city had planned turning it into a fire station, which prompted intense public debate. A citizen's commission appointed by city officials then recommended the city sell the mansion. Arrangements for its sale fell through in August, and a second call for buyers was sent out. Three potential buyers responded. The plan now is for the mansion to be bought by the Craig Realty Group, a California based company with the president being a native of St. Joseph and having strong connections with Missouri Western there. The proposal is for the mansion to be sold for $251,000. A contract is expected to be approved by the St. Joseph City Council on October 17th with closing on the property by the end of the month.
