News Brief

Aug. 19, 2011MARYVILLE, MO |  By: Wayman

Morning After

One city especially hard hit was Maryville, where students at the university had to evacuate.

Officials at Northwest Missouri State say about 340 students were in residence halls Thursday night when the storms rolled through, and were evacuated to the student union building in the center of campus to keep everyone accounted for. Dr. Jerry Wilmes is Northwest's Emergency Management coordinator and says overnight assessments of damage to the campus was difficult, but in-depth inspections are starting this morning.

Three office windows in the university's Administration Building were blown out during the storm, causing rain damage inside. Overall Northwest's Campus Safety tell us initial inspections showed tree limbs down, some flooded buildings of varying extent, and some roof damage, but thought other than the Administration Building, most of the campus damage was relatively minor.
