July 20, 2011ST. JOSEPH, MO | By: Wayman
The United Way in St. Joseph is asking for more flood volunteers.
Even though levels on the Missouri are dropping in many places, the group wants to keep a list on hand of volunteers that can be contacted as the problem of sand boils appear. That's slow erosion of the levees because of water pressure and other forces. The United Way is looking for people at least 16 years old with a photo ID able to report to a designated meeting area within 90 minutes of being contacted, willing to work a 3 hour shift and fill sandbags which weigh about 40 pounds. The office is acting as a centralized point for the region's flooding efforts, often coordinating logistics in communities as far north as the Iowa line. To place your name on the volunteer list you can contact the United Way of Greater St. Joseph, that number is 816-364-2381.
