LEAVENWORTH, KS (2011-06-10)
Leavenworth Kansas is preparing for big flooding in a big way, using extra large sand bags.
The efforts started yesterday, and city officials in Leavenworth are using sand bags that measure 3 feet by 3 feet. Stacking 5 of these together is the equivalent to more than 750 conventional sand bags. The Missouri River at Leavenworth is at about 20 and a half feet but expected to reach more than 25 feet by the end of next week. It hasn't happened yet, but city officials say they are prepared to start evacuations next week of a number of areas, including the riverfront campground, animal shelter, city airport and Sherman field, and the waste water treatment plant.
