A St. Joseph man will speak today about his grandfather, the owner of the Kansas City Monarchs.
E.D. Catron's grandfather, J.L. Wilkinson, was the founder of the team in 1920 and owned the team until 1948. Catron will speak about what it was like for his grandfather to be a white owner of a Negro league baseball team in the 40's. The program will start at 1 this afternoon at the Rolling Hills Belt Branch Library. This talk is part of the "Pride and Passion" African American Baseball Experience on display at the Belt Branch library through June 24th. THe exhibit is a national touring exhibit that tells the history of baseball's Negro leagues.
